Modcrosse is a non-contact version of lacrosse and utilises the traditional lacrosse equipment and other lacrosse specific tactics. A softer, spongy ball is used in modcrosse (compared with the hard rubber used in field lacrosse).

Primary Rules

NO contact with stick OR body

Consequence = Personal Foul = 1 minute penalty
If contact occurs the following guidelines shall be used to determine who is responsible for contact.

  1. Barging - A foul on the attacker. This occurs when an attacking player makes body contact with a defender who has adopted a stationary position with feet, arms and stick no wider than shoulder width apart.
  2. Blocking - A foul on the defender. This occurs when a defending player makes contact with an attacking player (with body or stick) by stepping across their path with their body or reaching across with their stick.
  3. Follow through - This occurs when the attacking player makes contact with a defender's stick or body whilst passing or shooting. The defender must be in a legal defending position with their stick in the vertical plane. No goal may be scored on a follow through.
  4. Overguarding - This occurs when the defending player moves their stick forward of the vertical plane whilst the attacker is passing or shooting causing contact.
  5. Simultaneous contact - The appropriate call in this situation may either be play on or a toss up between the two players.

FOUR SECOND Carry Limit

Consequence = Loss of Possession = Turn over the ball
A player may maintain possession of the ball for a maximum of four (4) seconds. The umpire will count 1001... 1002... 1003... *whistle*.

Number of players

Each team shall have no limit (7 preferred) on the number of players in the team.

Games of modcrosse shall have a maximum of four players plus a goalkeeper on the field at any one time. No other player other than the properly attired goalie is allowed in the goal circle.

Games of sofcrosse do not incorporate goalkeepers, and shall have a maximum of five players on the field at any one time.

Players may substitute at any time through the designated bench area.

A maximum of ONE player from each team may contest a loose ball

Consequence = Possession awarded to the team with one player who is contesting

Secondary Rules

Out of Bounds

  1. From Passes - if the ball goes out from a pass or a loose ball, possession will be awarded to the closest opponent of the team last touching the ball at the point where the ball left the playing area.
  2. From Goal shots - if the ball goes out from a missed shot on goal, possession will be awarded to the closest player to the point where the ball left the playing area.

Goals

  1. Scoring - when the ball passes over the goal line and through the face of goal, the umpire shall whistle a goal.
  2. Before a goal can be scored, the attacking side must have made at least one pass in its attacking half, regardless of whether the defending team intercepts or turns the ball over during play. However, once the ball crosses the halfway line, the count is reset and the attacking side must again complete one pass before scoring a goal.
  3. Restart of game - after a goal is scored the opposition takes possession at their goal crease and as soon as both sides are in their respective defensive halves, the umpire whistles the restart of play.

Dangerous Throw

Consequence = Personal Foul = 1 minute penalty
A player may not throw the ball in a manner which the umpire considers dangerous to any other players. This may occur when players attempt to shoot through other players.

Unsporting Behaviour

Consequence = Personal Foul = 1 minute penalty or ejection from the game
Any incident on or off the field which breaches the philosophy / sport of the game, deliberate and/or consistent roughness, unacceptable language may result in a player being ejected from the game after receiving a warning.

Impeding of Play

Consequence = Loss of Possession = Turn over the ball
Play should be continuous and no player may impede play (eg turning the stick over (trapping) and denying access to the ball to other players).

Goal Circle Crease Play

  1. Crease Infringement
Consequence = Loss of Possession = Turn over the ball
No attacking player may enter the crease with body or make stick contact with the goalie at any time.
  2. Use of Hands
Consequence = Loss of Possession = Turn over the ball
Only the goalie may use the hand to stop or catch the ball and only within the crease.
  3. Pass Back
Consequence = Loss of Possession = Turn over the ball
No intentional pass back into the crease is permitted.
  4. Re-entering Crease
Consequence = Loss of Possession = Turn over the ball
No player may re-enter the crease while in control of the ball.

Personal Fouls

  1. Location of Possession - All personal fouls will result in a one minute suspension from the game or until a goal is scored by the opposition. The team receiving a penalty should take the ball where the infringement occurred, or if in their defensive half, move to the half way position.
  2. Number of Fouls - A player may incur three (3) personal fouls before being expelled for the remainder of the game.

Start of the Game

The first named team shall start with possession. The goalie starts with the ball in their crease. All players must be in their defensive half of the playing area.

The ball is also given to the goalie for restarting the game after a goal is scored on them.
